Meemic Celebrates Educators During American Education Week

November 18, 2013

DETROIT, November 18, 2013 ‐ The Meemic Foundation, a non‐profit organization created by Meemic Insurance Company to provide grants to fund exceptional learning experiences, is encouraging parents and students to join them in supporting and celebrating educators in their communities during American Education Week (November 18 ‐22, 2013).

“Here at Meemic, we have the incredible opportunity to work with teachers and other members of the educational community every day,” said Meemic spokesperson, Pamela Harlin. “We consider it a privilege to be able to provide resources and support for these individuals through the insurance company and the Foundation. We hope that during American Education Week people will take a moment to express their appreciation for everything they do for our children and community.”

American Education Week was officially created in 1919 as a way to generate public support for education when it was discovered that 25 percent of the country's World War I draftees were illiterate and nine percent were physically unfit. Each year, during the week prior to Thanksgiving, education is in the national spotlight with many communities and schools hosting a series of events and celebrations.

The weeklong celebration spotlights the different people who are critical in building great schools for the nation's 50 million K-12 students. American Education Week’s celebration days include:

  • Monday, November 18: National Kickoff. Schools across the country will celebrate excellence in education by hosting kickoff events and activities.
  • Tuesday, November 19: Parents Day. Schools will invite parents into the classroom for a firsthand look at what the school day is like for their children.
  • Wednesday, November 20: Education Support Professionals Day. Individuals who provide invaluable services to schools are recognized for their outstanding work.
  • Thursday, November 21: Educator for a Day. Community leaders will be invited to experience the day as educators and to experience the challenges of teaching and the needs of students.
  • Friday, November 22: Substitute Educators Day. This day honors the educators who are called upon to replace regularly employed teachers.
