Finding a Reputable Contractor

Often, when storms hit an area, they attract out-of-state contractors who only stay for a limited time. These contractors typically advertise that they will cover your deductible and that they work directly with your insurance company. Frequently, they are unreliable companies that will not guarantee their work. Even if a warranty is promised, the company will be nowhere to be found in months and years to come. These companies will appear after large storms (e.g., hail storms) and will make promises and false statements in an attempt to perform work on your home that is not necessary. They have even been known to tell unsuspecting people that their home has been damaged when it hasn’t. You can protect yourself from these unreliable contractors by following a few simple steps:

  • Always check out contractors on the internet and through the Better Business Bureau.
  • Ask for references and read reviews of contractors’ work.
  • If a contractor promises you something that sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Typically, these contractors will leave flyers on your door informing you that your home has been damaged by weather (e.g., hail) and they have even been known to show photos of roof damage that isn’t yours. Remember, unnecessary insurance claims or roof repairs will impact everyone’s premium regardless of what these contractors tell you.

Protect yourself and your home. Always use licensed, local contractors that have good reviews and references. Your local Meemic agent may also be able to provide Meemic contractor program options.
