Like a Boy Scout, Be Prepared When Camping

July 01, 2015

Before you decide to go off the grid to enjoy the tranquility of nature, be sure to keep in mind a few tips that may help your camping experience be a more enjoyable one.

Plan ahead – Research your location and surrounds.  Make sure the location that you’ve selected is a safe one.  Check out the weather and dress accordingly. If you’re bringing your four-legged friend, be sure to check the campground’s pet policy.

Pack an emergency kit – Be prepared for cuts, insect bites or allergic reactions.  Common items to pack include insect repellents, antiseptic, pain relievers, bandages and sunscreen.

Make camp before dark – As you make camp, be on the lookout for sharp objects, broken glass, rocks, ant hills, bees and poison ivy.

Build your tent on a safe spot – Keep a safe distance from the campfire and pitch your tent on elevated land so it doesn’t flood in the event of rain.

Cover safety issues with family members – Make sure each family member is aware of poisonous plants.  Be sure children understand that they should never drink from a stream or river.

Be fire safe – Avoid building a fire if strong winds are present.  Make sure there are not any flammable items near the fire and never leave your campfire unattended.

Be aware of wild animals – Keep your campsite clean and free of food or garbage.  Store all food and garbage in bear-resistant containers or in your vehicle when not in use. Do not leave food unattended.  Do not sleep in the same clothing you cooked in as the cooking smells can attract wild animals.

Minimize your eco-footprint – Leave with everything you came with, especially your trash.
