The Vacation Road Trip – Prepare to Have Fun!

June 16, 2015

Nothing creates more family memories than a road trip. Be sure your trip is all that you want it to be by some simple planning and preparation before you go.

Renting a car on vacation this year? Be sure you’re in the know as to which Meemic auto policy coverages apply to a rental car. After all, you don’t want to purchase coverage you don’t need – and you don’t want to be exposed without adequate coverage.

Have your car inspected before taking a road trip to ensure an enjoyable and safe journey!

  • Inspect tires for proper inflation (and get better gas mileage too!) in addition to tread depth and any cracks in the sidewalls.
  • Inspect hoses, belts and clamps with the engine off.
  • Check fluid levels and windshield wiper blades.
  • Have brakes and your air conditioning system inspected if you are unsure about their condition.

Be prepared for an emergency by having a small amount of nonperishable food and water in the vehicle. Also be sure to have a cell phone car charger or consider picking up a "pay as you go" cell phone strictly for emergency use.

Travel with a well-stocked first aid kit.  Bring along extra medication in case your return home is delayed for any reason.

Don’t forget to bring a few basic tools along such as a hammer, needle nose pliers, adjustable wrench, WD-40 and a rag.  Sometimes, a simple tool can save the day!

Portable GPS systems can make traveling much more stress-free and can also help you avoid road construction and heavy traffic areas.  Many GPS-enabled smart phones have "an app for that" too!

In-car entertainment systems can be great for helping road-weary children stay entertained on long car trips.  You can also add to family togetherness by researching some great car games online before you go. Think License Plate Bingo, I Spy or 20 Questions.

Always pull over to use your cell phone while on the road. This is much safer, of course, but you may not be aware of local ordinances in areas you are passing through that may allow only hands-free use of cell phones.
